Notable Residents

  1. Tito Puente: Born in 1923, Tito Puente was a renowned Latin jazz and salsa musician and composer. He grew up in Saint Nicholas Houses and went on to become one of the most influential figures in Latin music, earning the nickname “El Rey” (The King).

  2. Al Pacino: Al Pacino, born in 1940, is an iconic American actor and filmmaker. Although he did not spend his entire childhood in Saint Nicholas Houses, he resided there for a significant portion of his youth. Pacino’s illustrious career includes memorable roles in films such as “The Godfather” series, “Scarface,” and “Serpico.”

  3. Piri Thomas: Piri Thomas (1928–2011) was an Afro-Cuban writer, poet, and activist. He lived in Saint Nicholas Houses during his early years and later wrote the acclaimed memoir “Down These Mean Streets,” which explored his experiences growing up in Harlem and dealing with racism and street life.

  4. Dapper Dan: Daniel Day, popularly known as Dapper Dan, is a fashion designer known for his pioneering work in streetwear and luxury fashion. Born and raised in Harlem, he operated a boutique near Saint Nicholas Houses, where he became known for his custom designs and collaborations with major fashion brands.
